Most Anticipated Horror Movies of 2020

The Turning(January 24, 2020)

PG-13

A young woman named Kate, played by Mackenzie Davis, is hired to look after two kids after their parents have passed away. Finn Wolfhard(It, Stranger Things) and Brooklyn Prince play the ominous, terrifying children. Kate soon faces horrors inside the house and realizes the home and children have a dark secret. This film is based on Henry James’ novella, the Turn of the Screw.

Color Out of Space(January 24, 2020)

NR

The Gardner family, led by Nicholas Cage, leaves the city life for small town living. One night a meteorite lands in their backyard and soon it has various affects on the town and before they know it, they’re up against an alien. This film is based on H.P. Lovecraft’s, “The Colour Out of Space”. This Lovecraftian horror film is highly anticipated since the concept was first thrown out 7 years ago. As you’d expect per it’s content, the colors are stunning.

Gretel & Hansel(January 31, 2020)

PG-13

This Grimm fairy tale is coming back to the big screen. We all know the classic story of Hansel and Gretel searching the woods, only to find an evil witch in the depths of it. Seems as though this version will have a little more depth than what we’ve seen before. Starring Sophia Lillis(It) and Alice Krige as the evil witch. The trailer will surely give you goosebumps.

The Lodge(February 7, 2020)

R

2020 is the year for the kids from It to star in other films. The Lodge stars Jaeden Martell(It), Lia McHugh, Riley Keough(Mad Max: Fury Road), Alicia Silverstone and Richard Armitage. The lodge is a psychological thriller, following a family that go to their remote winter cabin. The father has to go away abruptly for work when the children are left with their father’s fiance, where her dark past comes out to haunt them all.

Fantasy Island(February 14, 2020)

NR

Perfect for Valentine’s date night, Fantasy Island. Blumhouse has been pretty consistent with delivering top notch horror films. A group of people go to a resort in paradise. There they have their deepest fantasies made into reality. Soon they realize those dreams are really nightmares and they have to find a way to escape it. “Screams come true.”

Brahms: The Boy II(February 21, 2020)

PG-13

A young family moves into Heelshire Mansion after they experienced a home invasion that shook them all. Soon after moving in they find Brahms buried in the backyard and that’s when things start to get strange. If you haven’t seen the first one, that’s okay, because this film had to take a totally different direction.

The Invisible Man(February 28, 2020)

R

This film is an adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel. It’s directed by Leigh Whannell who has proved his talent in countless horror films, teaming up with Blumhouse to bring us this one. Reminding me of Hollow Man, it follows a woman, Cecilia(played by Elisabeth Moss) who escaped an abusive relationship. Her ex, Adrian(played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen), killed himself and left her a hefty sum of money so long she was found to be mentally competent. Moss questions his suicide and soon realizes she’s still at the mercy of her abuser. Now Moss has to escape his wrath and prove she’s not losing her mind. This is in the top 3 films that I’m looking forward to this year.

A Quiet Place Part II(March 20, 2020)

NR

The Abbott family is back for part II where they have to face the outside horrors. They have to worry about more than just the creatures that hunt by sound. Guess it’s time for me to finally get around to watching the first one.

Antlers( April 17, 2020)

R

Any film that has Guillermo del Toro attached has my attention. Antlers follows a brother and sister who live in a small town in Oregon who become involved with a young boy who has a deadly secret.

Insidious: The Dark Realm(May 5, 2020)

The fifth installment to the Insidious franchise, directed by James Wan. Like the other films, a demonic entity is looking for a connection to the world of the living and wants to unleash terrors.

The Organ Donor(May 15, 2020)

NR

The ninth installment to the Saw universe is set to release this spring with new games and familiar faces including Samuel L. Jackson.

Candyman(June 12, 2020)

R

Kicking off the summer with a fan favorite. All we need to know is that Jordan Peele is back at it with a sequel to the original 1992 Candyman which takes place in Chicago. Growing up in the 90’s, Candyman was a staple in molding my love for horror. I am thrilled for it to be coming back and with Tony Todd at that.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife(July 10,2020)

PG-13

This is a huge year for Finn Wolfhard on the big screen. He stars in this alongside Paul Rudd,  McKenna Grace and the original cast of Ghostbusters. A mother and her kids move to a small town in Oklahoma(noticing a trend with the small town horror?) where their grandfather had left a home for them. After a number of earthquakes shake up their home, they discover a link to the original Ghostbusters.

The Purge 5(July 10, 2020)

NR

The Purge is back again with its fifth installment. There aren’t a lot of details nor is there a trailer but it’s set to hit theaters this summer.

Morbius(July 31, 2020)

PG-13

A new antihero is in town with Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius. Set in the Marvel universe, Dr. Morbius attempts to cure himself of a rare blood disease but in turn he infects himself with a form of vampirism. I’m not one to run to the theaters for a Marvel movie but this one has enough of a horror aspect for me to.

The Empty Man(August 7, 2020)

R

Starting out as a graphic novel, the Empty Man is now getting a big screen debut. An ex-cop is looking for a missing girl and instead comes across a group of teens trying to summon a supernatural entity.

Malignant(August 14, 2020)

R

Directed by James Wan(his second release for the year), based on his graphic novel, Malignant Man. Not too much info out on this one right now but with Wan attached do you need anything else?!

Escape Room 2(August 14, 2020)

NR

We don’t know what to expect with the sequel to Escape Room but the first one definitely had me on the edge of my seat so I have faith this one will follow accordingly.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It(September 11, 2020)

R

The one universe that’s been very consistent is the Conjuring. I have enjoyed all the movies in the series so having another one is exciting. It’s expected when I sit down and watch a Conjuring movie, the hairs on the back of neck will stand up straight the entire time. This film follows Ed and Lorraine Warren during an investigation of a young boy whose soul they are fighting for.

Last Night in SoHo(September 25, 2020)

NR

A young woman is able to time travel back to the 1960’s where she meets her idol but things are not as they seem and everything starts to fall apart.

The Witches(October 16, 2020)

PG-13

As a young kid, The Witches used to scare the crap out of me. I would have nightmares of Anjelica Huston’s transformation. To see that it’s being reprised definitely takes me back to my childhood. Anne Hathaway is playing the grand witch and I think she’ll do it justice.

Halloween Kills(October 16, 2020)

R

Continuing the story with Michael Myers and Laurie Strode. This one is bringing back stars from the last Halloween as well as a few from the original, remember Tommy Doyle and Lindsey Wallace? Buckle up for the showdown.

The Coll3cted(TBD)

R

The Coll3cted is the third installment in the collector series with Josh Stewart returning as Arkin.

Fear Street(Summer 2020)

PG-13

Growing up in the 90’s I always loved going to the Scholastic Book Fairs the school would have and some of the books I loved were Fear Street. To hear now that they are doing a trilogy based on those books excites the little kid in me. The first is set to be released this summer, with no firm date right now.

Wrong Turn: The Foundation(TBD)

R

I loved the original Wrong Turn. The Foundation will be the seventh installment in the franchise. This one follows a group of friends hiking in the mountains(surprise, surprise) when they come face to face with, “the foundation”, a community that’s lived in the mountains for centuries.

False Postitive(TBD)

NR

There isn’t a lot of information about False Positive yet but the cast is stacked with Ilana Glazer, Justin Theroux, Sophia Bush and Pierce Brosnan. From my take it’s a modern day Rosemary’s Baby.
