10 Horror Movies to Watch on Valentine’s

Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s or celebrating Anti-Valentine’s, this list will surely get you through the weekend. Who doesn’t love a little bloodshed with their romance?

My Bloody Valentine(1981 or 2009)

Starting with the obvious ones. If you prefer the Canadian original or the American remake, a slasher film about a serial killer wrecking havoc on Valentine’s Day will surely have you checking your candy heart boxes twice.

Valentine(2001)

If you can get past Valentine’s 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this is a must-see Valentine thriller. Best friends are looking for a Valentine, while a killer is out for revenge.

Holidays(2016)

Holidays is a horror anthology that includes shorts for a variety of holidays; St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Christmas, New Years, Halloween and drumroll… Valentine’s Day. Director’s included on this anthology are Kevin Smith, Sarah Adina Smith and many more.

Bride of Chucky(1998)

Tiffany Valentine(hint hint) searches for the infamous Good Guy doll that’s inhabited by the love of her life, Charles Lee Ray. Like any couple they have their spats but through murder and mayhem they’re able to find love again. Can’t resist a murderous pair of plastic doll lovebirds.

Return of the Living Dead 3(1993)

This installment of the Return of the Living Dead franchise is classified as a romantic horror flick. Watching this as a child, I remember the nearly naked zombie prisoner at the beginning attacking the scientists in a military lab. Watching from above were the main characters Curt and Julie. Julie dies when she’s thrown from Curt’s motorcycle. Brokenhearted, Curt takes her body back to the military base to reanimate her just like he had seen them do to the naked zombie. Once she’s a zombie, they have a new list of problems to tackle. Curt loves Julie so much he stays by her side til the end even though she has a craving for human flesh.

Shaun of the Dead(2004)

The best thing to bring together a broken relationship is a zombie apocalypse. This zom-com is even for the faintest of hearts.

The Conjuring(2013)

This one may not make sense given that its premise is a family being tormented by the spirit of an evil witch but it’s fitting for the holiday because it introduces paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, the ultimate spook power couple. In their career they investigated over 10,000 cases of hauntings and other paranormal phenomena. As if dealing with the normalities of a relationship wasn’t hard enough, add in the mix of encountering demonic spirits regularly.

My Boyfriend’s Back(1993)

How about an early 90’s rom-zom-com, My Boyfriend’s Back. It’s the perfect story of boy meets girl, boy tries to impress girl, boy gets himself killed, boy comes back as a functioning zombie and wins girl’s heart. It’s a fun little film about the lengths we go for love.

The Strangers(2008)

A young couple, currently struggling with the future of their relationship, decide to vacation at a secluded summer home. What was supposed to be a getaway, quickly turned into a nightmare when they realize they’re not alone and they’re being targeted by a group of deranged individuals. This is an intense and brutal film. For me, it was the randomness of it all that made it all too real.

Ready or Not(2019)

Imagine marrying the man of your dreams. The man you plan on spending the rest of your life with, growing old and gray with. You’ve said your vows, now it’s time for the reception with your extended family and the main activity of the evening is the family hunting you down. That’s what’s happening to Grace. She must survive until dawn while the family does everything they can to kill her. This film has it all; suspense, wit, some thrills and surprises. And you thought your in-laws were awful.
